What is black tie?

Women – Black-tie attire for women indicates a knee- to floor-length gown or evening dress or palazzo-cut pants in a formal fabric, like silk charmeuse, chiffon, or Mikado, embellished with Alencon lace, embroidery, or crystals. The silhouette can be anything between a sheath and a ballgown.

Men – Black tie for men generally means a tuxedo comprised of a dinner jacket, often black, trousers, formal white shirt, an optional waistcoat or cummerbund, bow tie and formal black shoes.

Non-binary – Floor-length gowns (that cover the ankles), elegant pantsuits, dark suit jackets (paired with formal floor-length skirts or gowns), and tuxedos are all fair game for black-tie affairs.

The bride and groom kindly encourage guests to wear black.
